Termites in Mulch

Spring has arrived and it’s time for me to get some mulch for around my trees and plants. This week I got an email warning of a potential infestation of termites in hardwood mulch. This made me nervous because the mulch really helps to keep the weeds down and the plants around my home moist in the hot summer months.

After a little research, I uncovered more information that put me at ease. The email warning states that there were hoards of trees in Louisiana that came down from the storms and were shredded for mulch to be sold in national hardware store chains. These trees are potentially infested with the termites and will spread throughout the country.

It is true that there is a termite infestation in Louisiana. This has been well know and documented for decades. However it appears that the spread of the termites is more of a rumor. In fact, the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry keeps careful track of these pests. Damaged trees and lumber from areas where the termites are found, must be deposited in designated landfills within a quarantined area. Inspectors have validated that no violations of the quarantine have occurred.

While it is unlikely that the Louisiana termites are being transported in mulch, this is good opportunity to take steps to prevent insects from invading your home or rental. When using mulch, buy it from a local supplier so you know where it came from and inspect it for insects before you use it. Remove old tree stumps and logs from your property as these will attract local Eastern Termites. Inspect your trees for any signs of infestation and call a professional if you spot any termite activity. Check the foundation of your home for cracks or other entry ways for insects and seal them. Keep shrubs, bushes and trees back from the house so insects won’t get easy access.

If you spot a termite problem, get it treated right away to prevent further damage. Your home or rental property is an investment. Keep it in good shape and you will benefit in the long run.
